Hotel Zámek Havířov

Chateau history

The history of the chateau dates back to the 15th century. Originally a fortress built by a local yeoman, it has undergone many alterations throughout the centuries. The last major reconstruction took place after a destructive fire in 1823. After the Second World War the building fell into disrepair. When the new town of Havířov was built in the 1960s, the chateau was earmarked for demolition. Luckily, this never happened, and the building was repaired in 1970.

In 1992 the chateau was acquired by the town of Havířov, which invested in a major reconstruction project in 1997, to create the Havířov Chateau Hotel.

History of the chateau

According to local tradition, the original fortress building was located in the village of Šumbark, near the Lučina river, at a place known as the ‘Wolves’ Pit’. The first written mention of a new stone-built structure on the site of the current chateau dates back to 1588, though the building was probably erected during the previous century. Immediately to the north of the chateau was the wooden church of St Catherine and the local cemetery.

Later, this church was connected with the chateau via a covered walkway. By the end of the 18th century the chateau had grown to roughly its current size and shape.

On 30 October 1823 there was a devastating fire which engulfed the outbuildings, caused serious damage to the chateau itself and completely destroyed the wooden church and walkway. The chateau was repaired, and has remained largely unchanged ever since. A number of outbuildings were also erected, and a new church was built at a different location. Work began on creating a park around the chateau; however the plans were never fully carried out.

In 1845 the chateau ceased to function as the seat of the local nobility, and instead was used as administrative premises for the farm and accommodation for the office workers.

The hotel is run by the management company Zámek Havířov, s.r.o.
